Susan,
Nine years ago, my precious new grandaughter was diagnosed with hypophasphatasia
(rare bone disease) after seeing many, many different doctors. The situation
was similar, as their bodies do not assimilate calcium and they are prone
to mico fractures. I began my quest for information. This led me into field
of natural healing and I have a Nutritional clinic in Scottsdale and see
people with every kind of problem and disease who have been given up on.
By the way, my grandchildren are the jewels in my crown and ring my joy
bells on a daily basis and are doing wonderful. May God continue to Bless
you as you are a Blessing to so many people.

Sadly my mother died of carcinoid syndrome in 1990 in England. It affected
her liver but it took 10 years before she was diagnosed and it was my sister,a
nurse who did some research and took her findings to the doctor. My mother
had numerous tests in various hospitals in England and finally saw a visting
Amercan specialist in London, sadly it was too late to do anything as her
liver was seriously affected by this time. I worry sometimes that carcinoid
syndrome is hereditary as I have some strange symptoms which have been
put down to peri menopause. Your site has some wonderful information and
I have bookmarked it. Take care and look after yourself. Kind regards,
Moira

I am so glad to have found this Web Sight. It Is especially pleasing to
hear the stories such as yours who have managed to overcome this terrible
disease. I felt I needed to sign your book as I am looking for some information
mainly for my grandmother who was diagnosed with the disease over a year
ago and told she was living on borrowed time, but she's still here! At
the moment she is awaiting some treatment but we all feel that we dont
know enough about Neuroendocrine Carcenoid which is what she has.
If you have any information you could send me my email address is -
mlittle@bond.co.uk
Or If anyone else has had this specific type of carcenoid and can tell
me anything about it it would make me very happy.
Thankyou.

I have learned a lot from your web-site. I was diagnosed with carcinoid
after an emergency appendectomy in late August, 1999. The carcinoid is
in my liver with "too many spots to count" according to my doctor. One
of the spots in three inches across. We have started the Sandostatin. Do
you know if there is a specialist in this area?

I was diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma if Feb, 1999 and later diagnosed
with a carcinoid tumor. After several tests prior, everything came up negative.
I had lost approx. 40 lbs (165-127 lbs.). The tumor was found via a sigmoid.
I would like to talk with you more in detail and share my story. My work

Susan, I'm a three year breast cancer survivor. I'm the one who told you
that a port would make your life easier. I lost my best friend to adeno
carcinoid after a 19 month fight. Her name was Suzanne Spurrier and she
was the director of Harding University Library. Hers started in the appendix
and was inoperable in the pancreas. My best wishes to you! I left the support
group when she died.

Thanks for the information. I have had unexplained right side pain for
years and the doctors still cannot tell me what it is. I am not sure if
I should bring this possibility up or not. I have not lost weight but gained
and cannot lose. So maybe I am looking for an answer where there isn't
one. But what got me was the red face, neck and shoulders. I get that a
lot. Not everyday but often enough to be worrisome. I thought I was going
through my change. Again I thank you for your information as I had never
heard of this disease before.

Hi Susan,
I'm Sheryl. I was diagnosed a couple weeks ago when a carcinoid
tumor was found in the appendix. Further tests have revealed that
there are 3 more in the liver.
Haven't seen a specialist yet, There are no carcinoid specialist
in AK. I'm considering going to the Mayo Clinic in AZ.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your articles. It's provided me with more info than
other sources. There doesn't seem to be alot out there regarding
the liver that I've found so far.
My prayers are with you and other friends out there fighting
this battle.
Sheryl

Susan,
Thank you so much for your wonderful informative web page. My husband
was diagnosed last year after having many of the symptons you mentioned.
It took three emergency trips to the hospital and no one wanted to
do surgery. Finally on the fourth with my hucband in terrific pain, I demanded
that
they at least do a medical scope. Boy were they surprised. Gangrene
had kill the area of the small intestine near the stomach and they removed
3 feet of
small intestines. Then they found the cancer. Since then we have had
excellent treatment at the Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa. He is now on
the LARS injection
and interferon. He still has tiredness but no pain. As you say every
day is a blessing.
My prayers are with you.

I was dianosed with Accute lymphocytic Leukemia at the age of 4. I went
through chemotherapy and my hair fell out. I feel because of my illness
I didn't have a normal or typical childhood but my parent tried there best
to make it seem so. I remember one thing in particular I used to do to
make my parents laugh. When we would travel in the car I would wait for
a car to be along side us and I remove my wig. The passengers in the other
car would be awstruck. You have inspired me to add a page to my wed site
explain my triumph over cancer. I have been in remission since I was 7,
it has been 14 years!

Susan I have known you for years and met you at the Florida conference.
I have visited this webpage many times and have emailed you to tell you
how great it is but just wanted to put it in your guest book. I still say
you are a remarkable woman. I do not know how you did all of this research
while fighting carcinoid and breast cancer. You have such a positive attitude.
This has helped so many people.
I also did not realize that there were so many more who have signed
your book and are just lurking. I was reading some of your messages. I
hope everyone feels comfortable enough to just jump right in.
For the record I am a bronchial carcinoid. Rt lung removed in 1988 and
still fighting.

I was diagnosed in 1991 at the age of 35, have taken chemo
off and on since then. Never had any of the pain you talk about. I
went to the Dr. when I started flushing after I ate. Was diagnosed in July
of 1991,5HIAA was 125, Ct scan showed many spots, and liver biopsy confirmed
the diagnosis.
Have been on Sandostatin the whole time and it is a miracle drug ,
but very expensive. My disease has unfortunately progressed, started back
on chem June 15,1999, will do another Ct scan in November and go from there.
My children were 12 and twins that were 9 when diagnosed, I am very thankful
that I have seen my oldest graduate from High School and the twins are
now in the 11th grade. Glad I finally got a computer and found other people
with carcinoid syndrome. Thank You

Susan, It's been a long time since I visited your homepage, what a great
job you have done.
My e-mail system crashed last week and I lost approx 3 weeks of mail
so I haven't kept up with
the discussion list. Just installed my new computer and e-mail address
so now I can get back
on line. My ISP also gave me web space so maybe it's time to tell my
story. If I get that far
I will send you my url. Keep up the good work and stay healthy. I wanted
to attend the
conference in San Fran but Judy & I are leaving this week for an
anniversary cruise. Soory, the
cruise comes first.
Good luck.

Dear Susan,
It was a delight to find your website. My husband was diagnosed with
a carcinoid tumor in his left bronchus in March 1999. Surgery was needed
and a resection of the lower lobe was done. But right after the diagnosis
(which we had never heard of carcinoid cancer) I went straight to the internet
to become informed and I found your website. From there I was able to contact
Sloan and Kettering thru telephone and Dr. Richard Werner by e-mail and
Monica Werner was so very helpful to call me with information
on the subject. I pray you are doing well and our best regards to you
and your husband. Thank you so very much. Gratefully, Bernard and Jerry

Dear Ms. Anderson-
It was a delight to "surf into" your page. I found it while doing some
research on metastatic gastrointestinal carcinoid tumor. Our cancer center
has a patient information center that contains a number of PCs and full-time,
trained personnel to help our patients and caregivers
surf their way to a better understanding of their illness. Be assured
I will bring your page to their attention tomorrow.

Thanks for all your hard work on "carcinoid". My husband DX. in June with
small intestine surgery in July. Doing fine now. To have 3 mo.(5-HIAA)
test and colonoscopy every 6 mo. Found on routine colonoscopy by gastroenterologist
bright enough to check further into small bowel to biopsy inflammed area.
Thank goodness. Also spread to lymph nodes near area. These removed as
well. Took out about 20 inches of small bowel. Oncologist tells us "NOT
TO WORRY". He said it so many time on last visit that I think maybe we
should worry. We have most positive attitude but I sure would like to have
as much information as I can find. Appreciate your hard work and hope that
you are doing fine. May God continue to Bless You. Maybe we can talk again.

My son age 26 has been diagnosed with Carcinoid Cancer and just had 8"
of small intestine removed . There were two carcinoids, one large enough
to cause a blockage. He was diagnosed 4 years ago after having severe abdominal
pains, and it was found that he had many on his liver. The doctors have
been un-able to locate the primary tumor.
He is a college graduate with a degree in Computer Design and works
at Nevada Power.
I am very glad to see that there is a place that we can go to get information.
Thanks

I was recently diagnosed with carcinoid found during an emergency appendectomy.
It has metastisized to the liver, approximately 10-12 spots could be seen
during surgery. I am now awaiting results of the CT Scan and the 24-hour
urine testing. I have been trying to read to get as much info as possible.
This is all very new to me. I am not even aware of how knowledgable my
oncologist is in Carcinoid. I have a lot of research to do, but am currently
awaiting original test results.

I too have been having RLQ pain. I have had my appendix removed (completely
abscessed and necrotic). After having the appendix removed I started with
fevers, fatigue and increased pain. CT showed cysts-felt to be ovarian,
ultrasound was normal. Finally they decided to do an arteriogram. The arteriogram
showed a 2x4 cm lesion along the superior mesenteric artery-dx suggestions
were lymphoma or carcinoid tumor. None of the docs seem to know where to
go from here because the CT was relatively normal. I found your story interesting
because I am feeling a lot of the same frustration you did while trying
to find a diagnosis and get treatment. I am having trouble even getting
the docs to give more pain medication stronger than naprosyn. Keep up the
good work with the web site.

Hi Susan! Just discovered your home page tonight. What a blessing!!! I
have been DESPERATELY trying to find SOMEONE, ANYONE who also has had sweats
with carcinoid. They can't find any tumor and yet I have been diagnosised
with carcinoid syndrome and have been on Sandostatin for about 2 years.
Have you known or heard of ANYONE who has all the symptoms of carcinoid
syndrome but they couldn't find the tumor???
My husband and I grew up in Phoenix and left Chandler in 1988 to come
back to Calif. Tempe is a nice place and I went to ASU but I don't think
we could take the heat anymore...we're wimps! :) I've really enjoyed your
homepage and it's given me so much information and I thank you for that.

Best wishes to you from Aberystwyth, Wales, UK. I am about to start a Ph.D.
in information management/multimedia looking into the situation of paediatric
cancer patients in here in Wales - and joined some cancer mailing lists
in the USA to see how you do things as we are _way_ behind. I have read
your story and some parts made me angry for you (in the nicest possible
way). I wholly believe that we must maintain a positive and balanced attitude
to every challenge in life - and believe you have cracked it!! :)
Thank you for your pages. I hope it was OK that I read them as I
am fortunate enough not to be a casualty of cancer. I am lost for words
to say how I admire what you do and have done. I am sending a warm smile
and a virtual handshake... Gill

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January, 1998 and underwent a lumptectomy,
chemotherapy and radiation. This week I was told that I had a carcinoid
tumor and am just beginning to learn about it. I hope that I can keep the
same positive attitude that you have, but there are days when it's pretty
scary. I'll learn more about my condition over the next few days, as I
have several tests to schedule. I have not shared this latest diagnosis
with my mother. We just lost my dad and I didn't want to worry her until
I have more knowledge. However, my children know and have been great support.
Thanks for your story.

hope to get to a seminar so I can meet you. For readers..I had my first
carcinoid in 1983 and am still working 40 hours per week...just recently
on LAR20 and really doing pretty good except for tiredness. Have mets to
the liver with a lot of involvement, but no other treatments planned at
this time. THERE IS HOPE!!! I have had this disease now for 16 years that
we know of so please keep faith that you will keep making yourself going
and don't dwell on the negative. That's what I try to do. I also find great
comfort in beautiful music. Good health to all. Thank you Susan!!!

Dear Susan,
I was very happy to run into your web site. My mom was diagnosed
with carcinoid tumor in Feb 1998. She underwent surgery but
the tumor is back in the liver and the posterior abdominal
wall.
I have been in touch with Dr. Warner and he has
suggested an oncologist at Cedars Sinai. I am curious to
know how your visit with Dr. Warner went? Would you say it
was the turning point in the management of your case? I am thinking
of taking my mom to see Dr. Warner. Please feel free to ask
any questions or make suggestions - my mom lives wih her
brother in Corona, CA (60 miles East of LA). I hope you are
feeling better and wish you good health.
Thank You.
Sincerely,
Nik Doshi

Your story was very informative. We found Dr. Warner two weeks after my
diagnosis with Carcinoid Cancer...a lucky hit. He referred me to Dr. Larry
Kvols of UNM Health Science Center in Albuquerque, recently joined the
Moffitt Cancer Research and Treatment Group in Tampa, Fla. Surgery for
removal of part of lower intestine, colon, and liver was done at St. Joseph
Hospital by Dr Peter deIpolyi in May of 1998. Post treatment two daily
Sandostatin Injections until May 1999 when I started LAR. Will see Dr.
Kvols in Tampa in November. Concur with your opinion of Dr. Warner and
the Carcinoid Foundation. Laurie G.

I am trying to find out some information on the treatment of Neuro-endocrine
cancer for my cousin Ruby Burkett who has been dealing with it for 6 years.
She is about at the end of her rope emotionally and I just thought that
maybe I could find something to encourage her or maybe even something new
about treatment for it. She is currently being treated for it at the Moffit
Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida under the care of Lodovicco Balducci, her
oncologist. I read your story and it's very different than her's but I
wish she could have your outlook! Thank you for writing it all down, it
was very inspiring to me.

I had two carcinoid tumors removed from my small bowel in
1995. I find myself showing symptoms of carcinoid syndrome.
Did you ever experience severe joint pain? I'm currently in
the process of trying to find a physician. I've contacted the
James Cancer Center in Columbus Ohio for a referral. I was
glad to find your site, its loaded with lots of good info.
Thanks for sharing!!!

What a marvelous website you have! After reading your story
it is clear that you are one amazing person. The mother of
my daughter's college roommate was diagnosed with carcinoid
this week & I am trying to do research for her. You have
helped alot with the information here. Also this week my
mother in law was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since I'm
a nurse, they all turn to me for information. Thank you for
your help. I wish you well in your ongoing fight with cancer. I hope
I have your strength & positive attitude if
ever I am faced with what you have been. God bless you.

for all the info in "your Story" which is very similar to mine. Your experince
with interferon was very helpful. I was sorry to hear about the breast
cancer but glad to see you are taking it in stride, I guess we become hardened
by the carcinoid trial we have been through. Keep up the fight our thoughts
and prayers are with you.>

I found your story very interesting! My carcinoid was discovered on my
liver during gallbladder surgery in December 1996. Another surgery in March
1997 and the primary source was found in the ilium section of my small
intestine. My liver had too much metatasis to be removed. So, we are just
watching it. So far my liver function is normal as well as my blood tests.
I do have diarrhea I never had prior and don't know if it is a result of
intestinal surgery or carcinoid. So far I have had no treatment at all
except for the surgery.

I have just completed testing at Rochester Mayo Clinic and they removed
a 3cm polyp. The diagnosis: Duodenum, bulb, endoscopic biopsy: Carcinoid
(grade 1 neuroendocrine). Comment: In immunoperoxidase stains performed
on paraffin-embedded tissue sections, the neoplastic cells stained strongly
and diffusely for chromogranin and focally for gastrin. I will be returning
in 3 days for more testing. I appreciate your NetPage for the information
on Carcinoid. If you know of another site or an area on your site to go
to for information about my specific diagnosis and comment, I would appreciate
hearing from you. Thanks so much!! Signe

I have been struggling with symptoms for years. Dr.'s have found high levels
of somatostatin and are suspecting carcinoid. Doctors here are very uninformed
about it and I am trying to learn more. One symptom which I suffer from
in addition to fatigue and flushing is severe itching and burning over
my entire body. Have you heard of this being a symptom? No one has been
able to determine the cause or provide any relief including doctors at
Vanderbuilt University and Mayo Clinic in 1993-94. Any help or advice you
could give would be appreciated. My address is 10850 W. Treeline Ct., Boise,

I enjoyed your web page, very informative. I had a hard time finding info
on Goblet Cell Carcinoid until finding Carcinoid.org's web site. I will
know more about my condition after an appointment tomorrow. I am recovering
from a hysterectomy and appendectomy. Through tests the goblet cell was
found in my appendix.

Congratulations on the Sanger Award. Your tenacity for
overcoming mountains shines through in all you do/share.
Be proud of yourself! I have known of this cancer but
had never researched it. Your informative reports are
enjoyable. I've always believed in acquiring knowledge,
and have loved the internet as a fantastic heap of
resources waiting to be absorbed. A friend who
suffered/died long ago was only diagnosed after the
autopsy, she insisted upon. She was made to believe
her symptoms were in her head. The physician's,
"I'm so sorry.", was of little comfort to her
family/friends. Bless you for sharing your
story/research and this wonderful site.

Great story about your experience with carcinoid. I had a carcinoid tumor
on my appendix 4 years ago. Doctors did a right hectomory (?). Just last
week, my urologist did a ctscan and found a desity on my liver. I'm quite
nervous. I have a doctor appt. on July 6th to get a referral to a liver
specialist. Wish me luck.

Thank you for your candid comments, which I am sure are helping a lot of
people (patients and health care "professionals") learn more about this
rare condition. I am a medical writer associated with Sandostatin Injection
and Sandostatin LAR Depot... so it is important for me to be able to convey
in my writing the terrible impact that carcinoid syndrome can have on patients.
Unfortunately, misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis are all too common. Thank
you again for the service you are providing. Good luck to you! Tina Bashline

My husband has had stomach problems (pain & diarrhea) for years &
has had CT's of Abdomen, Ultrasounds, Upper GI, Colonoscopy, & 5-HIAA
Urine test. All normal! He has flushing episodes too. He's changed doc's
many times & now has a doctor who seems determined to get to the bottom
of this with us. She suggested Octreoscan to confirm diagnosis of Carcinoid.
I've been so scared about this.Wouldn't something have shown up on one
of the other tests if he has a carcinoid tumor? When I read your guest
book entries, I became more hopeful to see that many people have had this
for up to 18 yrs & more! Is this a normal range or are these people
considered miracles? I'm so scared at what lies ahead for my husband. Good
luck to you.

This registration is for my mother, Pat May (Wichita, KS), age 65, who
two days ago went in for a hysterectomy. When the doctors got in there,
they noticed tumors on her small intestine. They turned out to be carcinoid,
about a dozen of them, and removed 3 feet of her small intestine. There
was also another place lower on the intestine with a grouping of tumors,
which they removed. She, nor any member of our family has ever had cancer.
We are very anxious to learn more about this and would appreciate any resources
you could direct us to. God bless you for initiating this website!

Thanks for your excellent site which was & is truly a "shining star"
since learning of my carcinoid cancer in Jan. '99. Would be especially
interested in hearing from anyone who also has the variant referred to
as "presacral" Mine has metastases in the skeletal system. Current Rx is
Sandastatin LAR & Interferon-alpha 2B.

Hi! My Dad is in the hospital being tested. Found carcinoid polyp in his
colon, we a waiting for liver biopsy info. My Mom has asked me to begin
researching treatment options. Dr does not think it is actually the "syndrome"
yet it is a carcinoid. Any direction you can give would be appreciated.
Your site is a good start for me! Blessings, Kimberly<><

Thank you for taking the time to share this information. I was diagnosed

and have been giving myself shots of Sando 3X a day until last month I
started the LAR. Have not been doing as well. I am new to the internet
and have only just begun to find info on Cardinoid and people to talk to

Thank you for all of the valuable information on your web site. I have
taken the long way 'round to discovering I have carcinoid. The doctors
first dx all my heart problems and I went through a multitude of tests
and tried to learn all I could about heart failure and cardiomyopathy.
Now I have been diagnosed with carcinoid in addition. I have been studying
as fast as I can to learn about this. Your site not only gives information
but adds the human touch/the contact with someone else going through this
that I have greatly needed. Thanks

I was diagnosed with lung carcinoid May, 1997. One third of my right lung
was removed, but the cancer had metasisized to one of the lymph nodes.
Normally this tpe of cancer only responds to surgery, but since it had
metasisized, I was given chemotherapy of etopiside and cystplatin. I developed
a swelling above my left collarbone five months ago. CT scans reveal small
masses, but too small and location makes it impossible to biopsy. I need
a docotr who specializes in carcinoids. Ironically, I live 30 miles from
Sarasota, but never heard about the Seminar. Any info you could provide
re carcinoid doctors would be appreciated. Rosemarie age 55

My husband has had carcinoid syndrome since 1995. He is so thin. 6ft2in
and only weights 135. He gets very cranky and sleepy. Is the sleepiness
part of the disease? He takes 100 mg morphine AM and PM to control the
pain and Imodium for the diarrea. He can still eat three meals a day and
gets around. Most of the problem is the sleepiness and he can't stay awake
after dinner. Glad to find this web site. Maybe I can find some answers.
I have read alot about this disease in the last few years. It is very slow
growing and there is no treatment. Just alot of prayer!

it is metatsatic, stage 4 or advanced, she is only 60 years old. my family
is in shock and we have been told she only has a 10-15% chance of beating
this. i have been doing a lot of research but have not found any concrete
stats on carcinoid survival rates. we have also been told that the chemo
drugs like sandostatin are only 15-20% effective. your story is an inspiration

I have had pain in my LRQ along with strange hormone-like reactions (low
blood-sugar, inability to tolderate ANY kind of stimulant from caffine
to chocolate) for the past 15 years and have told every Dr. I've ever seen
about it -- to no avail. I still don't know what this pain is but it acts
up and makes me weak. In the past month, I've started having ongoing diarrhea.
Am going to a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy. It seems most my symptoms
match many of those of a carcinoid. Since I live alone, I'm scared. That's
why your story gave me hope. Tomorrow I leave for Phoenix on a business
trip. I will try to contact you. Thank you again!!! Gerry Williams (I'm

Susan,
Thank you so much for all of your insightful information on carcinoid
tumors. I recently went to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa Florida with
my mother on 5-3-99 to find out the treatment for her carcinoid tumors.
The oncologist suggested sandostatin for my mothers condition and said
surgery is not an option, which I find rather frustrating after everything
i have read about carcinoid tumors. I would like to know if you have any
suggestions on where my mother should go for a second opinion? Do you know
anything about the Sandostatin Lar treatment? I have to say i am extremely
baffled at the fact the doctor seems to think surgery is not an option.
Please if you have any additional information send me an e-mail. Thankyou
so much for all your info on this disease. Goodluck and Godbless.

Just stopped in to see about the Wednesday Jam Sessions.
I noticed the geneology links because I would like to
research my own geneology.

My mother-in-law had her first carcinoid tumor removed in Feb. 93 and has
had 4 surgeries since. I am looking for any useful infomation and I sure
found some here. Thanks for providing help and reassurance to others who
are suffering this awful disease. Good luck to you and your family.

My son, age 36, is seeing an oncologist in Omaha this week, but I do not
know how experienced she is with carcinoid. What questions should he ask
of her? Also, do you know of any carcinoid specialists in Omaha (or in
the Midwest)?
Thanks, Kathy

I enjoyed reading your web page and comments from others. I recently had
a lung removed because of carcinoid tumor and because of the location,
1/5 of my atrium also had to be removed. Doctors removed 19 lymph nodes,
and only one node showed carcinoid cancer cells. I have an appointment
with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, AL within the next week,
and hopefully they will find a treatment that will "kill" the remaining
cells. If I find a new treatment, I will let you know. Thanks for the web
information, and may God bless you in your fight against this strange type
of cancer.

I have had the top lobe of my right lung removed because it contained a
Carcinoid tumor. The tumor was contained, and the lymph nodes were not
malignant. PTL
I still suffer from fatigue and severe night sweats, which I think
is connected to the tumor but can't prove.
Do any of your contacts have experience with these ongoing conditions,
and has anyone found a relief?

My mom has just been diagnosed with carcinoid nodules in her
stomach and has been not having super luck with information
and testing. I think your story will give her some ideas of
what is ahead and what to ask about. Thank you for making it
available.
